Comprehensive Eye Examinations
Our comprehensive eye test takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes to complete, and includes the following assessments:
- Detailed history, including general health, medications, occupation, leisure activities and family history.
- Autorefraction – automated, computerised calculation of the distance prescription while observing the Farmhouse or hot air balloon image inside the autorefractor.
- Visual acuity tests which measure the sharpness of your vision at distance and near
- Retinoscopy, which uses the way light reflects from the eye to determine the approximate spectacle prescription
- Subjective refraction using the phoropter which is placed in front of the eyes. You are asked to compare various lenses to fine-tune the prescription
- Binocular balancing, which is performed in the trial frame, to ensure that the eyes are coordinating together correctly
- Ocular motility tests are performed to assess the eye movements and tracking
- Cover test is used to check the alignment of the eyes and to detect any strabismus (squints)
- Ophthalmoscopy is used to assess the health of the inside of the eyes. We check all the parts from the cornea in the front of the eye through to the retina at the back of the eye
- Tonometry is used to measure the pressure inside your eyes and is often called the puff test. It is a quick and completely painless test.
- Colour vision tests can detect any deficiencies in colour vision and perception by the ability to see numbers against various colour combinations. This is useful both occupationally and detect possible eye health problems.
Contact Lens Fittings
On completion of a comprehensive eye test, should contact lenses be desired, additional tests are performed to determine the suitability and safety of wearing lenses.
- Slit-lamp examination, using a device similar to a large upright microscope, will let the optometrist assess the ocular surface by magnifying the cornea, conjunctiva, sclera and lids and lashes. The tear layer is also assessed for any indication of dry eye syndrome.
- Where the initial examinations indicate suitability, the optometrist will select the most appropriate make of contact lens in terms of lens material, water content and prescription and fit a set of diagnostic contact lenses. After a period of settling, the vision, fitting and movement of the lenses will be checked, and any modifications that are required will be made.
- Instructions on how to insert and remove the contact lenses, in addition to the cleaning and storage of the lenses will then be provided, and you will need to demonstrate the ability to perform these tasks before being able to take the trial lenses home to wear. The optometrist will also discuss the wearing schedule and necessary precautions that must be followed.
- The lenses, cornea and vision are assessed after approximately two to three weeks to determine compliance and that the ocular health isnt compromised before further lenses are dispensed.
Childhood Myopia Management
Short-sightedness (myopia) is increasingly affecting more children and teenagers, owing to increased time spent on near activities and electronic devices.
Following a comprehensive eye test, the optometrist can determine if myopia is at risk of developing or if it is increasing.
Increasing myopia results in increased lens thickness in the spectacles and may affect school progress and sporting activities. It also carries the lifelong risk of significantly increased chance of retinal tears or detachments, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Researchers have developed spectacle and contact lenses that are specifically designed to slow down the progression of myopia and the accompanying elongation of the eyeball by up to 60% compared to
standard single vision lenses.
Our optometrist and practice are accredited providers of these revolutionary lenses.
Our management program involves regular assessment of the vision, and any prescription changes every six months to assess and plot the efficacy of the treatment and make amendments as necessary.
Glaucoma Screenings
We offer stand-alone glaucoma screenings for Vitality and other medical aid wellness programs.
The screening included tonometry measurements, using the puff test, to check the pressures are in the desired range and in addition, we assess the optic nerve head at the back of the eye using the ophthalmoscope, to check for any other signs of glaucoma.
License Screenings
We offer screenings for licenses such as drivers and skippers licenses.
Frame Repairs & Adjustments
A perfect fitting of your spectacles is necessary for good vision.
For spectacles and sunglasses purchased at our practice we include a complimentary service of standard alignment, adjustments, repairs, and cleaning of your spectacles.
This includes bending the temples to fit around the ears comfortably, nose pad replacements, changing of temple tips, replacement of temples if the spring hinge has snapped, replacement of screws that have fallen out and spectacle alignment.
Frame selection and Dispensing:
Once we have confirmed your prescription and type of lenses needed, we will help you chose the correct frame.
We focus on personality, style, and face shape, for example:
- A person with a round face often suits rectangular frames. They help lengthen the face and create a sharper, a more distinctive look.
- A person with a square face often suits oval frames. They help soften and narrow the hard angles of the face.
- A person with a heart shaped face often suits a cat eye style with rounded base and oval shaped frames.
- People with oval faces can suit many shapes of frames. It is considered the most ideal shape because of its balanced proportions.
- Diamond face shape often suits a round, oval or cat eye shape. This brings definition to the brow line and creates a balanced proportion.
This is the rarest face shape.
After the correct frame is chosen, measurements are very important. Measurements must be taken for single vision, bifocals, accommodative supportive lenses, office lenses and multifocals. In order for the lenses to do their job, they need to be centered over your eyes. We will then discuss the various anti-glare coatings and tints that best suit your needs.
